Search Console Setup and Reporting

The free tool Google gives every website owner, set up properly and explained. One time job, $145.

Search Console Setup and Reporting gets you the free tool Google gives every website owner, set up properly and explained. Property verification walked through with you, sitemap submitted, indexing requested on your key pages, and a dated baseline report so there is a real before. $145, fixed, agreed before I start.

The problem this actually solves

Google publishes a free tool that tells you which of your pages it has indexed, which searches people used before they landed on you, and which pages it tried to read and gave up on. It is called Search Console, it costs nothing, and most small business owners either do not know it exists or set it up once and never opened it again.

Without it, every conversation about your website is guesswork. Somebody tells you your rankings improved and you have no way to check. Somebody tells you a change helped and there is no record of what things looked like before. You pay an agency for six months, see no phone calls, and cannot tell whether the work was bad or whether Google simply never indexed the pages they wrote.

The reason this is the cheapest thing I sell is that most of it is setup rather than repair. The reason it is worth $145 is that setting it up wrong is easy and costs you months. The most common mistake is creating a property for one address when your site answers on several, so www and non-www report separately, each showing half your data, and nothing ever adds up. The second most common is submitting a sitemap that nobody checks and assuming that means it worked.

The other half of what you are buying is the dated baseline. A number written down today, before anything changes. Without one there is no honest before and after later, only somebody’s word for it, and my word is worth the same as anybody else’s until there is a measurement behind it.

What is included

Four things, and one of them needs you for about two minutes.

Property verification, walked through with you. Google requires the domain owner to prove ownership, and there is no way around that. I set up the right kind of property, work out in advance which verification method fits where your domain is registered, and then we do it together on the call.

A domain property rather than a URL prefix one. This sounds like a detail and it is the difference between one clean report and four partial ones. A domain property covers every version of your address at once. A URL prefix property covers exactly one, which is the classic setup mistake that makes everything harder to read for years afterwards.

Sitemap submitted and confirmed. Submitted, and then checked that Google reports it as read, which is a different thing from submitting it.

Indexing requested on your key pages. Your homepage and the pages you actually want found. Not every page at once, because the request is rate limited and hammering it does not help.

A dated baseline report, and how to read it. Indexed count, observed positions, the date. Then a walkthrough of which three numbers on that screen are worth your attention and which ones are noise, because the interface shows plenty of both.

Who this is for
You are early. New business, new website, or not ready to spend real money on search yet, and you want to know whether Google can see you before you do. This is the cheapest way to find out, and it becomes the measuring stick everything else gets judged against later.

What is not included

This is the most important boundary of the four, so I want it in writing. Search Console will surface problems. Showing you the problem is included. Fixing it is not.

If I find something outside this list, I will tell you what it is and what it costs. I will not quietly do it for free and I will not quietly bill you for it either.

How it works

Within 24 hours of buying, you get a report. I establish from outside what a console would tell you: how many of your pages Google has indexed against how many you actually built, whether your sitemap is reachable and well formed, whether robots.txt is blocking anything important, and whether your site resolves on one address or several. I also work out which verification method will fit you before we speak, so the call is not spent hunting for logins.

Then we talk for 30 minutes and verify it live. This is the part that needs you. Bring your registrar or hosting login. We verify the property together, submit the sitemap, request indexing on your key pages, and I walk you through reading the screen.

Then I record the baseline and hand it over. Dated, written down, and yours. The property is in your name, not mine, so it stays with you whether or not you ever work with me again.

What I cannot promise you

I cannot show you data that does not exist yet. A brand new property starts empty and Search Console backfills nothing from before it was created. If you expect numbers on Thursday you will think the product failed, so I would rather set that expectation now: the first useful read is a week or two out.

I also cannot promise the console will find something wrong. Sometimes the setup is fine, and then what you have bought is the certainty that your foundation is solid and the knowledge that your problem is somewhere else. That is a real answer and I will give it to you in writing.

Common questions

Why can’t you just do this for me?

Google requires the owner of the domain to prove it, and there is no way around that by design. It is a two minute job, but it has to be done by you. It is much quicker to do together on a call than for me to write out, so that is how we do it.

What do I need to bring?

Your domain registrar login, which is wherever you bought the domain name, or your hosting login. If you do not know which one that is, or you cannot remember who you bought it from, say so and we will work it out on the call. That happens a lot and it is not a problem.

Will I see my rankings straight away?

No. A brand new property shows almost no data at first and Search Console does not backfill anything from before you set it up. The first useful read is a week or two out, and meaningful movement is four to six weeks. That is Google’s timeline, not mine, and there is nothing anyone can do to speed it up.

What if the console shows problems?

Then you will know about them, which is the point. Showing you the problem is included in this. Fixing whatever it reveals is not, and depending on what it is the fix lives in one of the other services. I will tell you which one and what it costs rather than quietly running up hours.

Is this worth $145 if I have no website?

Not really, and I will say so. If there is no site, there is nothing for Search Console to report on. In that case your fastest route to being findable is your Google Business Profile, and after that a build. I would rather point you there than take the money.

Do you do Bing too?

Yes, free, as a goodwill add on. Bing Webmaster Tools can import everything directly from Search Console once it exists, so it takes about five minutes. Several AI assistants read from Bing’s index, so it is worth having and it costs you nothing.

Where to go next

Not sure this is the right one? The overview page explains how the four pieces fit together, and has a free ten minute check you can run on your own business before you spend anything. If you want all four, the full Search Visibility Setup is $750 rather than $970 separately.
